Retail & Consumer

Keep the till ringing. Keep the estate running.

Retail runs on rhythm: opening hours, delivery windows, trading peaks. When technology stops, the trading day stops with it. Numata provides the managed operations, cyber resilience and AI-assisted capability that multi-site retailers and consumer brands need to trade with confidence.

Why they work with us

A single partner across store, warehouse, HQ and channel.

Numata brings strategy, cyber, operations, modern work and AI under one governance model. That means one accountable partner for the estate, one plan for peak, one view of risk and one roadmap the operating board can trade against. No vendor triangulation when a till goes down at 4pm on a Saturday.

What we take responsibility for

Four missions in retail.

  • Estate uptime, from store to warehouse

Point-of-sale, back-office and logistics kept running. Proactive monitoring, on-site cover and a service desk that understands trading hours.

  • Cyber resilience aligned to PCI DSS

Protect card data, customer records and loyalty programmes. Segmentation, 24/7 detection and response, and evidenced controls for auditors and acquirers.

  • AI-assisted operations across peak

Forecasting, demand shaping, replenishment and colleague copilots, governed through our Managed AI practice. Deployed with human-in-the-loop and clear accountability.

  • Colleague technology that actually helps

Modern devices for store, HQ and DC teams. Identity, secure access and Microsoft 365, tuned for a frontline workforce that is not always at a desk.

The pressures that shape the sector

What retail leaders are contending with.

Retail leaders are not asking for more technology. They are asking for less variability. The six pressures below are the ones we hear on every first conversation, from grocery to specialist and from single-brand to multi-fascia groups.

  • Peak trading windows

Black Friday, Boxing Day and back-to-school leave no room for an outage. Change freezes and readiness reviews are non-negotiable.

  • Multi-site estate complexity

Stores, DCs, HQ and concessions each have their own connectivity, hardware and refresh cadence. Consistency is the hard part.

  • PCI DSS and data protection

Card data environments must be tightly scoped, segmented and evidenced. UK GDPR raises the bar on customer data across loyalty and CRM.

  • Omnichannel and unified commerce

Store, e-commerce, marketplace and app must reconcile stock, price and identity in near real time. Integrations are where fragility lives.

  • Colleague turnover and training

Store technology has to be intuitive on day one. Onboarding, joiners-movers-leavers and device lifecycle at scale is a constant.

  • Cost-to-serve pressure

Margins are tight. Every technology decision is judged on impact per pound, from cloud spend to store hardware refresh.

How the engagement runs

From baseline to peak-ready in five deliberate steps.

  1. Assess

Estate, cyber and cost-to-serve baseline across stores, DC and HQ.

  2. Stabilise

Close critical exposure. Bring monitoring, backup and support to a known-good standard.

  3. Standardise

Common platforms, images and identity across the estate. Reduce variability, not features.

  4. Optimise

AI and automation where they earn their keep, governed through Managed AI.

  5. Run

24/7 service, quarterly business reviews and a joint roadmap tied to trading calendar.

What good looks like

The evidence the business can point to.

  • Peak-ready operations

Change freezes, uplifted cover and runbooks rehearsed before every trading peak.

  • PCI DSS aligned

Scoping, segmentation, logging and evidence collection to support acquirer and QSA reviews.

  • Store-first service design

Response tuned to trading hours, with clear priorities for tills, payments and network.

  • Managed AI, governed

AI use cases delivered through the AI Studio with policy, data controls and measurable value.

Managed AI, retail operations

Forecasting and replenishment, governed as a managed capability.

FAQs

Common questions from retail.

Do you support multi-site retail estates?

Yes. We run technology for retailers with distributed estates across stores, distribution centres and head office, coordinating on-site engineering, remote support and vendor management under a single service model.

How do you approach PCI DSS?

We work with your acquirer and QSA to define scope, segment the card data environment, apply the required controls and gather ongoing evidence. Our IT Operations and Cyber Resilience practices handle the day-to-day controls that keep you compliant between assessments.

Can you cover peak trading periods?

Yes. We plan for peak from October: change freezes, uplifted service desk cover, on-call rotations, runbook rehearsals and pre-agreed vendor escalation paths. Our aim is a quiet Black Friday, not a heroic one.

Do you work with our existing PoS, ERP and e-commerce platforms?

We are platform-agnostic. We integrate with the PoS, ERP, WMS and e-commerce stacks you already run, and we are candid about which components are worth stabilising versus replacing.

How does Managed AI apply to retail?

We deliver AI as a managed capability through our AI Studio: forecasting and replenishment assistants, colleague copilots for HQ functions, and customer-facing use cases where evidence supports them. Every use case has an owner, guardrails and measurable value.

Can you support store openings, closures and refits?

Yes. New-store technology mobilisation, refit uplifts and closure decommissioning are handled as productised workstreams with fixed timelines, so your property and operations teams can plan around them.

What about seasonal and franchise partners?

We can extend identity, endpoint management and secure access to seasonal colleagues, concessions and franchisees, with joiner-mover-leaver processes designed for high turnover.

How do you evidence value to the business?

We report against a shared scorecard: uptime by site type, mean time to restore for trading incidents, cyber posture, cost-to-serve trend and value delivered from AI and automation. Numbers the operating board and store leaders both recognise.
